Adobe’s new HTML5 beta

Adobe has a new product – Edge that is an interface for designing animation for HTML5.  Should be a great interface to use all of the great open source javascript libraries out there, i.e. jQuery, Mootools, but with a familiar After Effects style interface!

Congratulations to the four finalists in the Denver Day of Rock Poster competition, Nate Guerra, GwenAnn Hua, Skye Sant and Tyler Glasser. The judges had a difficult time narrowing down to just four, which is a great testament to the students who entered. All of the finalists are CU Denver design students in Design Studio II.

The Old Spice Guys go to Casa Bonita!

Wieden+Kennedy creatives Craig Allen & Eric Kallman bring ideas, insights, and a tasty reel of work for Skittles, Careerbuilder.com, and yes, the infamous “I’m on a horse” spot for Old Spice that has swept every major award show, has millions of followers on YouTube, and a slew of parodies. They just have one request. Being big South Park fans, they want to go to Casa Bonita. Wanna go with them?

Come hear them at RMCAD Thursday, February 17th at 6PM. We’ll then hold drawings for Casa Bonita vouches so you may go to dinner on ADCD with Eric and Craig. Just think. You’ll get to talk to the winners of the 2010 Cannes Grand Prix for Television AND enter the diabolical Black Bart’s Cave—all in one night! Wow!

Camarts.org is live!

The new website for the College of Arts and Media, University of Colorado Denver is now live! The new design has extensive links to student work being created in the Visual Arts program, including Digital Design, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Music, Film and Theater. We have designed it to be a resource for current students and faculty so that we can see how student outcomes are directly linked to what students are doing in the courses. Plus, it looks cool!

Scientific/Medical Animation in the NY Times

Nice article about scientific and medical animation recently posted in the NY Times. Over the last decade, medical animation has improved dramatically from a simple accessory to a valid, accurate teaching tool.

Cinema 4D Net Render and Text

Hi All,

I understand that there have been some issues with text objects using the NetRender render farm. As with Illustrator, InDesign or any other software package, text used in your document must be installed on the machine that is doing the imaging/rendering. In order to be sure your file will render correctly, please either use standard fonts (Helvetica, Garamond, Gill Sans, etc) or try making your text editable (effectors will not work on editable text). To test and see if the font is installed on the render farm machines, please make a quick 60 frame low resolution render using the font(s) you want to use and send to the render farm well in advance of using it in your project. If there are issues after this, email the font to me (travis.vermilye@ucdenver.edu) and I will install the font on the machines.
When using a render farm it is imperative to have your files ready to render well before they are due. This is the ONLY way to allow time for testing and to be sure your files render correctly. Waiting until the night before it is due to render will NEVER (well almost never) work.

Turns out that ugly and hard-to-read fonts are actually better when it comes to learning. Who would’ve guessed that?

Branding Event

The Brief is an art director’s event that is happening tomorrow night:

The Brief is a student design competition simulating a late night at an ad agency. A design brief will be developed by Jay Roth, a Sr. Copywriter and ADCD Chairman, for our beneficiary client DAVA, a local arts-education non-profit focused on serving underprivileged youth. Intercollegiate teams of four students (a Senior, Juniors and a Sophomore or Freshman) will be directed by senior creatives from the local design and advertising community through three hours of pencil and paper concepting and digital execution culminating in a client presentation.

The Brief is open to design and advertising students at all levels. Each team will have minimum one laptop (not required to participate) with the focus on traditional concepting – thumbnail-sketches and mind-maps followed by digital roughs. In addition to receiving valuable real world experience, and networking opportunities with local professionals and with each other, student winners will receive scholarship money.
